Save your Sunday, March 15th for a master class in boom operation with veteran boom operator Ken Strain, plus a panel moderated by Whit Norris featuring Serena Reichenbaugh Simpson, Will Hirsch, Allen Williams, Felipe “Flip” Borrero, and Kevin Cerchiai!

The event runs from 10:30 AM- 4:00 PM at the IATSE Local 79 headquarters and will include giveaways, a raffle, and light refreshment. It's FREE and open to the public! RSVP here

Instructor

Ken Strain has been working since 1993 as a boom operator in Hollywood, California and now resides in New York City. He has worked on numerous television series including House MD and Lost, as well as feature films. Ken teaches the art and skill of boom operating to the next generation of sound people all over the world. His background in stand-up comedy keeps the class fun and light, while still very informative.

Panelists

Whit Norris, CAS,(Moderator) has been a production sound mixer for over 30 years. His credits include Dogma, Fast 5, Anchorman 2, Ant-Man, Fate of the Furious, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Bad Boys for Life and the upcoming Ron Howard Netflix film Hillbilly Elegy. Whit is currently mixing  "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier". He is a member of the Cinema Audio Society, IATSE 695, and IATSE 479 and serves as Vice President of Local 479

Felipe “Flip” Borrero, CAS has worked as production sound mixer for over 40 years starting with documentaries and working into television and features. He has won a Primetime Emmy Award and has been nominated for another Emmy and two Cinema Audio Society awards. Flip’s work includes The Rat Pack, The Fast and the Furious, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and American Made feature films, and his recent series work includes "Ozark" and "Doom Patrol".

Kevin Cerchiai has worked in the entertainment industry for nearly 30 years as a sound technician on feature films and television. He has been a part of two teams nominated for an Academy Award for Sound Mixing (Transformers and Transformers: Dark of the Moon). Because of his unique career, Kevin has been fortunate to travel around the world to places like Japan, China, the UK, the Caribbean, and all around the US. Last year he worked on Bad Boys for Life, additional photography for The Jungle Cruise, and Ron Howard's Hillbilly Elegy.. Kevin is currently working on Marvel's "The Falcon and Winter Soldier" series for Disney+.

Will Hirsch is an experienced bag mixer, specializing in Doc and EPK style mixing. From EPK on Godzilla: King of the Monsters and First Man to Jumanji: The Next Level, Will has worked hard to streamline the bag style of mixing in fast paced environments while still capturing high quality sound!

Serena Reichenbaugh-Simpson is an Atlanta-based production sound mixer. Her most recent work includes Apple TV’s The Banker and Netflix’s Holidate. Serena got her start in the entertainment industry with commercial dialogue editing and sound design. Her work in those fields earned her two Telly awards before she transitioned to sound mixing. She graduated from Full Sail with a Bachelors of Science in Entertainment Business and Recording Arts.

Allen Williams worked right out of high school as a right hand man, shooting, editing and running sound for all forms of video productions while still working on his own project. In 2001, he day played booming on his first feature. In 2009, Allen joined IATSE 479 and has been working as a boom operator full time ever since. In 2013, he began teaching sound to other union members and in 2017 launched Sound Speeds, an A/V production studio and equipment rental facility specializing in sound education and equipment testing. His recent credits include "Black Lightning" S3, "Walking Dead" S7 & 8, and "Stranger Things" S2

Ken Strain will be part of the panel discussion as well.
