The Gotham Sound Expo arrives in Boston! Come to chat with the manufacturers and your fellow mixers and play with the gear; stay for lunch, drinks, and giveaway prizes!

Representatives and gear will be present from DPA, Lectrosonics, Sanken, Sound Devices, Zaxcom, and more!

The expo will take place Sunday, November 6th from 11am to 4pm in the Boston area - exact location TBD, but you can RSVP now here or on facebook (it's free, but it'd help us to have an approximate headcount).

X32 Will Mix For You

The Behringer X32 v 3.0 firmware update adds automixing!

From the release notes:

The Version 3.0 firmware adds automixing with Dugan-style gain sharing on two independent groups to the input channel 1-8 processing.

The automatic mixer algorithm dependably distributes the total amount of gain among the assigned channels in the same group, considering their speech level, fader level and the adjustable weighing factor. The speaker with the highest combination of volume, fader level and weighing factor will receive higher gain in the mix, while the others would be attenuated by the same amount, ensuring a stable low background noise floor without any gating/ducking artifacts.

The update to 3.0 also allows you to control the X32 remotely using Behringer X-TOUCH control surfaces via Ethernet network or MIDI, directly.

It Can Be Your Wingman Anytime

Sound Devices has announced Wingman, a free iOS wireless control app for 6-series mixer/recorders. With Wingman, users can view meters; start and stop audio recordings; enter and edit metadata; arm, disarm, and rename tracks; circle a take or designate false takes; and create sound reports quickly and instantly email them directly from your iPhone or iPad.

In addition to the app (available in the Apple store now - requires iOS 8 or higher), Wingman requires firmware version 4.00 (downloadable from here) and purchase of the WM-Connect Bluetooth dongle, which begins shipping this Friday, September 9th. Update, 9/14: The WM-Connect is currently backordered through mid-October 2016. Orders will be fulfilled in the  order received.

Here's a fuller Wingman feature list from Sound Devices:

  • Remotely start / stop audio recording
  • Edit metadata, circle takes, and designate false takes; updates instantly reflected on mixer
  • Edit track names, arm/disarm tracks
  • Edit sound report headers & create sound reports in “current directory” (as defined by MENU > File Storage > Folder Options), stored on “target media” which is either CompactFlash or SD card inserted in mixer
  • Email sound reports (CSV format) directly from mobile device
  • Monitor levels from multiple meter views on mobile device
  • (688 only) Monitor auto mixing activity from mobile device
  • From within the app, easily switch control from one WM-Connect-enabled 6-Series mixer to another one on set with a couple taps of a fingertip.
