Sound Production/Post-Production Seminar
A Conversation Between Sound Production and Sound Post
Walt Disney Screening Room
500 Park Ave. at 59th St
Saturday. October 30th, 2010
10 AM Breakfast
11 AM Seminar
Eileen Horta
Supervising Sound Editor, "Rescue Me"
Chris Newman
Sound Mixer, Amadeus, What Happens in Vegas
Today’s production sound mixers have elegant tools at their disposal, but they work at a serious disadvantage: they have little or no connection to the post people.
The production sound mixers rarely have any idea what they truly have recorded. Almost all monitoring is done via headphones and many production sound mixers don’t hear their product on loud-speakers until their films open!
If there is no dialogue with the post, how can production mixers understand their work? How can they know what they can get away with? What are the standards? What is usable?
This workshop is to enable sound mixers to educate themselves about post production. Join Eileen Horta, supervising sound editor of "Rescue Me" and "Gilmore Girls", John McCormick, sound mixer of "Rescue Me," and Chris Newman, production sound mixer of Amadeus and What Happens in Vegas and special guests to explore the connection between production sound and post production.
Arrive at 10 AM with your favorite pair of headphones to have breakfast and pre-screen the "Rescue Me" scene on your headphones that the panel will be discussing onstage.
The next time your producer tells you, “We’ll fix it in the mix,” wouldn’t you like to know if it’s really possible?
Special Thanks to Sennheiser for their generous support in making this seminar possible.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Zax
All sorts of developments in the world of Zaxcom wireless:
The TRX700 transmitter has been discontinued.

The TRX992 has been replaced by the TRX942, which will accept AES42 microphones
Digital workflow is a vital part of production audio these days and one of handiest tools is the Metric Halo ULN-8. But don't take our word for it; read about it in action:
And when Battle: Los Angeles needed a scalable multitrack audio solution, Paul Ledford, with an assist by Gotham, turned to a intriguing set-up involving the ULN-8 and the Euphonix MC Mix.
In the fast-evolving world of digital audio, firmware updates are your gear's best friend, helping to shield you from the hurly-burly of production with the latest features and bug-fixes. Keep them strong with updates!
Not entirely coincidentally, here are links to the firmware updates for many major audio manufacturers:

New from NAB!
NAB
2010
is in full swing and there's all sorts of nifty stuff premiering! To
show just three examples:
Zaxcom
has rolled out the
TRX900LT,
combining crystal clear digital wireless transmission, a built-in
backup recorder and remote control functionality via ZaxNet into a
single, lower-cost system for episodic television production, motion
picture and broadcast events. It's scheduled to begin shipping this
summer.
Lectrosonics
has introduced a new
Quadpack Receiver Dock,
a powerful production tool which incorporates two SRa Series Dual
Channel Digital Hybrid Wireless compact receivers into a lightweight,
rugged assembly that provides up to four audio channels in a
tiny package specifically engineered for portable mixing bag use.
And
PSC presented their new
PSC Power Star,
which provides clean, quiet, power distribution for your entire sound
cart. It contains a built in 15-amp DC power supply and battery charger
and will also operate as a uninterruptible power supply when connected
to a rechargeable battery.
FCC
Consumer Alert
Most users do not need a license to operate this wireless microphone
system. Nevertheless, operating this microphone system without a
license is subject to certain restrictions: The system may not cause
harmful interference; it must operate at a low power level (not in
excess of 50 milliwatts); and it has no protection from interference
received from any other device. Purchasers should also be aware that
the FCC is currently evaluating use of wireless microphone systems, and
these rules are subject to change. For more information, call the FCC
at 1–888–CALL–FCC (TTY:
1–888–TELL–FCC) or
visit the FCC's wireless microphone
Web site.
If you're a
licensed Part 74 operator, you may continue to use 50mW and greater
wireless systems under certain conditions. Eligible parties include a
person or organization engaged in the production or filming of motion
pictures or television, so, to the best of our knowledge, this includes
below the line crew. More information on also can be
found here. To apply for a
license, visit
www.fcc.gov/Forms/Form601/601.html
If you have any questions about these usage restrictions, please give
us a call at 1-866-GOTHAM-8 or e-mail
info@gothamsound.com.
We are required by
the FCC to post this notice, and you should soon be seeing it anywhere
wireless microphones and related communications equipment are sold or
leased.
Zaxcom
has just released the details of their nifty new IFB recievers. The
ERX1 and ERX1TCD receive high
quality digital audio, timecode and metadata from a Zaxcom IFB
transmitter and the TCD even outputs timecode continuously, to help
keep everyone in sync.
The receiver also
allows variable audio delay to compensate for SD downconversion. It's
also perfect for anyone who needs to get reference audio and timecode
to a camera.

Tascam HS-P82: Initial
Impressions
The
esteemed
Danny Michael's thoughts on the
new 8 track recorder.
There's
very little worse than returning home after a shoot to find that one
file corrupted that contains the epic ten minute tracking shot that
sells the whole movie. Fortunately, there's now a surprisingly easy and
affordable solution:
Repair Kit.
Elegant in its
simplicity, Repair Kit functions entirely over the internet. First it
analyzes the damaged file locally, comparing it to an uncorrupted file,
pulling stills and figuring out if the file is salvageable. If so, a
30mb sample can be uploaded to the Aero Quartet company, who will
customize a solution that you then implement right on your home
computer. You can even see a watermarked version first, so you can
check the results before you buy.
Gotham recently ran
into a problem with just such a file and we couldn't be happier with
the process. It was pain free and worked splendidly.
At

a fantastic resource for cart-based location sound mixers.
Sound Devices and Gotham Sound cordially invite you to experience the

anyone that works in the film and television industry. Friend of Gotham

Some equipment can be
re-blocked to use new frequencies. Please call or e-mail us
if you have any questions about your specific equipment.
Also, the FCC formally
acknowledged that there is a large group of unlicensed (“Part
15”) wireless microphone users, and that these unlicensed
users will be restricted to 50mW of RF output power. They are also
working on a disclosure statement that would be distributed,
“at the point of sale or lease,” to explain the
rules. We therefore are recommending that any individuals or
organizations eligible for a license under Part 74 apply for it. We
will be documenting the steps we are taking in our application to
assist others prepare their own.

Any customer who orders a TRX992

before April 9th, 2009 will get anIFB100
transmitter for free.
Limit one per customer, but, hey, are you going to complain about a
free IFB100? I thought not.
Matt
Schneider of PostWorks New York
tells us they've been testing it and it works great: “Media
Composer 3.5’s new ability to import multi-channel,
monophonic BWF audio as a single master clip has completely eliminated
the previously arduous task of using 3rd party software tools to
interleave audio prior to import. This render was time-intensive,
required double the storage, and slowed down the process of making
dailies available in a speedy manner. It has and will make lives easier
for film assistants everywhere! It is also an enormous help to those
recording for reality TV content where lengthy recording times and
multi-character sets push file sizes far beyond the 2GB file limit.
Small feature, huge benefit!”
So there goes one
more brick in the wall between sound mixers and post-production.

G-Tech
Introduces Solid-State Drives
G-Tech
has announced a
new family of external drives based on 2.5” solid state drive
(SSD) technology – the G-DRIVE mini SSD (120GB
and 250GB)
and the RAID 0/1 G-RAID mini SSD (250GB
and 500GB).
These high-performance, plug-and-play storage devices are ideal for the
film, television, and broadcasting users who capture, offload and edit
digital content in challenging remote environments. Because the drives
have no moving parts, each drive can withstand extreme shock up to
1500Gs and can endure higher altitudes, vibration and temperatures when
compared to traditional hard drive-based solutions. Delightfully, these
new drives also provide higher data transfer rates, lower seek times
and use less power, all while delivering a cooler, quieter operation.
They're currently
in pre-order - we'll let you know when they ship!
Lectrosonics
recently released photos of a nifty new mockup: the 4 unit SRa receiver
holder, more colloquially known as an Octopac. "The real thing will
have a four way antenna splitter, 8 SMA terminated RF cables, 8 audio
output jacks and a battery sled." says Larry Fisher, president of
Lectrosonics, "We are trying to figure out what the best combination of
size and function is." Lectro is also considering a version that can
accomodate the 5P version of the SRa (the one with the TA5F wart on the
side). We'll bring you more on the product as it develops.
